After a couple of shots, her nerves seemed to have settled, and it was easy to admit she was having fun. Stevie, Sage, and Regina had commandeered her from Chuck and they all now stood at the end of the tables toward the wall, protected from the rest of the world as the men in their group all stood around the tables, but blocking off access to their group. She positioned herself with her back to the rude bastard that made her feel bad, and her heart fluttered every time she and Chuck locked eyes. He either winked, smiled, nodded, or a combination of the three at her. He looked his usual amazing self tonight. He’d changed into a deep blue short-sleeved, button-up shirt, tucked into his jeans, which fit his ass perfectly. She’d had a chance to admire the sheer size of his thighs earlier, and she tried covertly assessing him throughout the evening. People genuinely seemed to like him, and each person in the office had made their way to his side to banter and laugh with him. He looked positively happy and in his element. As she mused on that, it occurred to her that they hadn’t had any amount of time to just be around each other, and watching him now, how he behaved and interacted with his friends and co-workers made her heart swell. He was a genuinely good man. Strong, smart, built, and just plain good.

She’d had to tamp down the panic more than once as the night wore on. He didn’t deserve to be brought into her drama and her life. He deserved so much better than that. She’d also slightly cringed when Stevie had asked her how Dax was doing. She had hoped by now that he’d have called her and explained himself, but, of course, he hadn’t. No mother should have to make that decision, and she was pissed off that she was facing it now.

“Okay. Okay. I’m taking my bride and going home. We won’t be in tomorrow and don’t come looking for us, either. We’re honeymooning at home.” Levi’s smile lit up his whole face.

She’d mostly known him as the surly one of the bunch, generally wearing a grimace that she’d come to find out was because he was usually in pain. An IED had injured his leg in Afghanistan and the aftereffects lingered to this day. Her eyes slid to Sage, who was most definitely not a blushing bride, but a smart, dependable, worthy partner to the men she shared Bluegrass Security with. Being the computer geek of the firm, you’d never know it to look at her. She didn’t scream geek; rather, she boasted sultry, sexy siren. The brains were a bonus.

Levi wrapped his arm around Sage’s shoulders and began making their way to the door amid congratulations and guffaws of laughter from their friends. Her heart pattered again when Sage tipped her face up to Levi’s; the happy, contented smile written clearly on her face. It made her sigh.
